do we really want no pain? 
the giver is a book that takes a world with no poverty, crime, sickness, or unemployment--ultimate happiness.  pure utopia.  the society is structured, rigid, and no one questions why it's like that.  and then, there's Jonas, the receiver of memories from the giver, a man who knew how society once was.  it wasn't peaceful, but it wasn't hypocritic. is it good to sacrifice your humanity to live in a peaceful and ordered society?
